Google Revamps Suite of Nest Cameras: New Specs, Lower Prices

Nest’s products have been called some of the best on the market, but Google is looking to take its lead in the smart camera market even further. The company is expected to make some big changes to the Nest family of products, including a new camera model, a new app, and a new pricing structure.

Nest Labs, the company behind the smart home products that are now synonymous with the Google Assistant, has updated its line of Nest Aware cameras and outdoor lights. The latest models take up to two minutes of video, and they have a new feature that allows you to tell the Nest app where it is in the room and the device will automatically turn on the light illuminating your space. They also include a new motion-sensing feature to track people and pets, and a new sensor to detect smoke.

Google’s Nest line of connected home devices is expanding, and Google’s been busy updating its lineup. Late last week, Nest announced a new $49.99 Echo Show device, which can replace a full-sized Echo Dot. And now, Google is launching the Nest Hello, a $99 smart video doorbell.

There’s a lot that goes on at Google’s offices, and now they may record up to three hours of it without paying a monthly fee.

The tech behemoth recently announced that a wireless version of its Nest Cam would be released at the end of this month, coupled with an upgraded wireless version of their Nest Cam Doorbell. They also announced the release of two more camera models before the end of the year.

HDR technology is included into the most recent cameras and doorbells, which improves clarity and improves the nighttime mode. New algorithms also enable the gadgets to examine twice as many pixels at double the frame rate. These algorithms also naturally assist the cameras in deciphering things and can distinguish between a human, animal, or vehicle, and can transmit information straight to a homeowner’s phone through the Google Home app. In the event of a wi-fi outage, these devices feature a local storage capacity that enables them to retain any recorded video for up to an hour.

Finally, consumers are no longer have to buy a subscription to store video when purchasing Nest devices. Each camera can save up to three hours of video on its own, and users can subscribe for a subscription that includes 30 days of cloud storage and the option to call 911 directly from the Google Home app for $6 per month. There’s also a $12/month subscription that includes 60 days of cloud storage and the ability to record continuous video for up to 10 days with the Nest Cam.

In addition to these general upgrades and subscription services, Google has crammed a variety of features into each of the devices it has revealed. Here’s what you can expect.

Google Nest Cam (battery): Features & Specs

The simplicity of installation is the most important effect made by this new battery-powered camera. Choosing a location for security cameras used to be dictated by the electrical design of a home or business. The Google Nest Cam, on the other hand, is wireless and has a battery that is claimed to last up to four months. These gadgets may now report for duty from any location that the user chooses.

The battery level may also be checked via the Google Home app. Here, a user may see how much longer the camera’s battery will last before it has to be recharged.

Nest Cam by Google (wired)

The pricing of the wired version is its major selling point. This is Nest’s cheapest indoor camera yet, yet it’s powered by the same processor as the more costly battery-powered model. This version, however, does not include weatherproofing, making it a purely inside camera.

Nest Cam by Google (floodlight)

The floodlight cam’s most appealing feature is its intuitive motion detection. Google claims to have created a way for recognizing any approved pets, caregivers, family members, or lovable riff-raff by putting pictures into their system. Google also says that this gadget can distinguish between human, animal, and vehicle movement. This means it won’t turn on if a branch moves in front of it, for example.

Nest Cam Doorbell by Google

The new Nest Doorbell’s major improvement is its wider range of view. Viewers can now see the whole body of a person standing at their door, as well as a better view of parcels, thanks to the 4:3 aspect ratio.

The new Nest Doorbell is also battery-powered and fully wireless, unlike the previous doorbell.

Data Protection

Given the personal nature of a device like a camera, numerous concerns have been raised about the data security of such a system when used in combination with a big data aggregator like Google.

All video is encrypted in the device and on the route to servers, according to evaluations. There’s also a flashing LED light that indicates when video is being uploaded to Google.
